Department of Microbiology

  • Overview

Medical microbiology is a vital branch of medicine focused on preventing, diagnosing, and treating infectious diseases caused by bacteria, fungi, parasites, viruses, and prions. Medical microbiologists study pathogen characteristics, transmission modes, and infection mechanisms to aid in pathogen identification and treatment recommendations. They also monitor potential health risks, educate communities, and assist in epidemic prevention and control.

The Mycology Unit identifies fungi and yeasts from patient samples, while the clinical parasitology laboratory confirms intestinal parasite diagnoses through microscopic examination of fecal samples. Serology involves identifying antibodies in serum to diagnose infections, autoimmune diseases, and blood type compatibility. Techniques include ELISA, agglutination, precipitation, complement-fixation, and fluorescent antibodies.

Immunology and serology explore the human immune system and serological techniques. The Department of Microbiology at Jubilee Mission Medical College & Research Institute aims to educate medical students on microbial science and empower them to diagnose and treat infectious diseases. Additionally, the department conducts laboratory testing for over 18,000 serology tests and 17,500 bacterial culture and sensitivity tests annually, with separate sections for bacteriology, mycobacteriology, serology, and mycology.

  • History of Department

The department started in 2003 with Dr. T V Rao as the Professor and Head of the department. Under his eminent leadership the department became one of the best Microbiology Laboratory.

He was assisted by Dr. K.V.Suseela , and other staff members to bring it into the present status. Dr. Binoy Kurian and Mrs. Jisha Paul and Mrs Jophy joined the department in 2004.The non teaching staff members Sr.Ally,Laboratory technicians.and Mrs.Vijaya Lab assistant are there to support them.

Dr. Sathiavathy (Ret. Prof & HOD Microbiology,Govt. Medical College,Thrissur) and Dr. Chithra Valsan Joined the department in 2006. Dr. Shailaja Joined in 2011 and Dr.Rosmi Jose joined in 2014.
