Facilities

The pathology department laboratory services include :-

  • Histopathology

Histopathology deals with study of diseased tissues to make diagnosis as well as to provide prognostic information. The final diagnosis of the disease is often made by the histopathologist and can have an important bearing on clinical management and patient care. Well equipped histopathology service laboratory handles around 8000 specimens annually.

Histopathology laboratory services are interpretation and reporting on :-

  • Surgical pathology specimens

  • Second opinion /Consultation specimens

  • Emergency intra-operative surgical specimen consultation with squash /Imprint cytology/ Frozen section.

  • Autopsy specimens

  • Immunohistochemistry

  • Immunoflorescence  Direct – Renal and skin biopsy

  • Molecular studies – EGFR mutation analysis

  • Special stains (PAS , GMS , AFB , MPO , Reticulin , Verhoff’s Elastic stain , Giemsa stain , Massons Trichrome , Van gieson’s, mucicarmine, pearls stain).

  • Intra operative frozen section

Histopathology department undertakes intra operative frozen section.

  • Cytology

Is the study of cells. It is used extensively to detect cancer. Most well known is the screening test for uterine cervical cancer known as PAP smear test .FNAC is another method by which a fine needle is passed into the specific site, cells are aspirated, studied and a diagnosis is made. It is a very cost effective simple procedure for diagnosis, to assess the prognosis and effect of treatment in certain diseases. FNAC is done in the pathology department. Ultra Sound Guided /CT guided FNAC from deep seated tissues is done in the Radio Diagnosis Department. Some times intra operative neurosquash prepartions are also sent to Pathology for immediate diagnosis to decide further course of brain surgery.

All cytology specimen are processed by both conventional and liquid based techniques Cytology laboratory services include performance, interpretation and reporting of,

  • Fine needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC)- Conventional and sonography assisted.

  • Clinical pathology

Is the branch of pathology in which diseases are diagnosed based on study of blood, urine, stools etc. It uses chemical, hematological, microbiological, serological and immunological methods. The central laboratory in the hospital has the most modern equipments and systems for these tests. Annual turnover is more than 3, 50,000 tests. Emergency lab functions 24 hours.

  • Telepathology
