OBSTETRIC CRITICAL CARE WORKSHOP – 01/02/2026

An Obstetric Critical Care Workshop was successfully conducted on Sunday, 1st February 2026, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM at Jubilee Hall, A Block, Gate 1, Jubilee Mission Medical College, Thrissur. The programme was organized by the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, JMMC, in association with the Departments of Emergency Medicine, Anaesthesia, Critical Care and Transfusion Medicine, and the Thrissur Obstetrics and Gynaecology Society (TOGS).

The workshop aimed to enhance knowledge and practical skills in the early recognition and effective management of obstetric emergencies, with a special focus on improving maternal outcomes and reducing maternal mortality.

The programme was inaugurated by Dr. Niji Justin, Mayor, Thrissur Corporation, who was the Chief Guest. The event was graced by Fr. Renny Mundenkurian (Director), Dr. Benny Neelamkavil (CEO), Dr. M A Andrews(Principal) & Dr. Shibu Kallivalappil (Medical Supdt).

The workshop was conducted under the patronage of Dr. V. P. Paily, with Dr. Sareena Gilvaz as the Academic Chairperson. Dr. Bindu Menon, HOD, Department of OBG, JMMC, Dr. Neetha George, President, TOGS, and Dr. Resmy C. R., Secretary, TOGS, played key roles in organizing the programme.

Scientific Sessions

The morning academic sessions covered crucial topics in obstetric critical care.

Session 1 :
focused on triage, rapid initial assessment of critically ill obstetric patients, indications for referral, and management of maternal cardiac arrest.
Session 2 :
dealt with hypertensive emergencies in pregnancy including HELLP syndrome, peripartum cardiomyopathy, and embolic catastrophes such as amniotic fluid and pulmonary embolism.
Session 3 :
addressed postpartum haemorrhage, emphasizing optimal care and outcomes.
Session 4 :
focused on sepsis in obstetric patients.
Session 5 :
included discussions on blood and blood component therapy, coagulation monitoring and correction, and massive transfusion protocols including ROTEM. Each session was followed by interactive discussions with expert panelists, ensuring active participation and clarification of doubts.

Hands-on Work Stations

The post-lunch session consisted of hands-on work stations conducted from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, providing practical training to participants.The Resuscitation Station covered BLS and ALS in pregnancy, defibrillator use, crash cart setup, commonly used emergency drugs and dilutions, and arterial blood gas interpretation, with support from the Emergency Medicine team.

The Oxygen Therapy, Airway and Ventilation Station focused on oxygen delivery devices, bag-valve-mask ventilation, airway adjuncts including LMA, NIV, HFNC, intubation preparedness, FONA, and different modes of ventilation, guided by the Anaesthesia team.

The Haemorrhagic Shock Management Station addressed recognition and initial management of shock, IV access, fluid resuscitation, inotrope use, critical care equipment, and ECMO, led by the Critical Care team.

A dedicated PPH station was conducted under the guidance of Dr. Bindu Menon & Dr. Neetha George, focusing on practical management strategies.

Conclusion

The workshop was highly informative and well received, with the participation of 150 consultants and postgraduate students from various medical colleges across Kerala. The combination of structured lectures, expert discussions, and hands-on training provided a comprehensive learning experience and significantly enhanced participants confidence in managing obstetric emergencies.All the delegates appreciated the program which was a huge success.

  • Supervision of all Pts during entire labour was done by a trained nurse investigator.
  • Tools used for data collection were excellent & also the data collection procedures were very systematic.
