Department of Gastroenterology
Overview
Gastroenterology emerged as a specialized field of medicine in the late 20th century, focusing on diseases of the digestive system, including the gastrointestinal tract, liver, pancreas, and biliary tree.
The rapid advancements in medical knowledge posed challenges for the broader field of General Medicine to address the intricacies of nutritional issues. However, with the evolution of medical technology, the development of endoscopes, scanners, and molecular diagnostic protocols revolutionized the early detection, treatment, and management of gastrointestinal diseases.
This progress led to the establishment of distinct branches within Gastroenterology, including Luminal Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Pancreatology. The introduction of liver transplantation further delineated Hepatology as a separate division in medical education and practice.
Today, Gastroenterology stands as a specialized discipline equipped with advanced tools and techniques to diagnose and treat complex gastrointestinal disorders, marking significant progress in patient care and management.
