Department of Microbiology
The Department of Microbiology at Jubilee Mission Medical College & Research Institute is integral to patient care, medical education, and infection prevention. The department provides comprehensive, 24/7 diagnostic services across bacteriology, mycobacteriology, mycology, parasitology, serology, and molecular microbiology, ensuring timely support for clinical decision-making in both routine and emergency settings.
The laboratory handles a substantial annual workload, performing over 32,000 culture and antimicrobial susceptibility tests, 45,000 serological investigations and about 81,000 virology test. Diagnostic capabilities include microscopy, culture techniques, and advanced immunological assays such as ELISA and indirect immunofluorescence (including ANA testing). The department is equipped with molecular diagnostic platforms, including syndromic multiplex systems (e.g., BioFire), enabling rapid pathogen detection. Specialized fungal diagnostics, including Aspergillus galactomannan and β-D-glucan assays, support early diagnosis of invasive fungal infections.
The department is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, with emphasis on clinical microbiology, laboratory diagnostics, and infection prevention practices. It contributes to hospital infection control activities, including surveillance and antimicrobial stewardship.
Specialized units in mycology and clinical parasitology provide targeted diagnostic services. Through its integrated approach to diagnostics, teaching, and infection control, the department plays a critical role in improving patient outcomes and addressing emerging infectious disease challenges.
The department started in 2003 with Dr. T V Rao as the Professor and Head of the department. Under his eminent leadership the department became one of the best microbiology laboratories.
He was assisted by Dr K V Suseela, and other staff members to bring it to the present status. Dr. Binoy Kurian, Mrs. Jisha Paul and Mrs Jophy joined the department in 2004. The non-teaching staff members Sr.Ally, the laboratory technicians and Mrs.Vijaya, Lab assistant were there to support them.
Dr. Sathiavathy (Ret. Prof & HOD Microbiology, Govt. Medical College,Thrissur) and Dr. Chithra Valsan Joined the department in 2006. Dr. Shailaja joined in 2011 and Dr Rosmi Jose joined in 2014. Later, Dr Ardra M joined in 2015, Dr Linju Mole Joy joined in 2019 and Dr Jane Mathew joined in 2021. At present, there are six faculty members and three senior residents.
The department started MD Microbiology course in 2011. There are 2 post graduate seats per year. 14 postgraduate residents have graduated from the department so far. The molecular biology section of the department was the first among the private laboratories in Thrissur to get NABL accredited during the COVID times.
The Microbiology department is on the 4th floor of A & B blocks of college building.
