Facilities
The student laboratory of the Department of Biochemistry is a well-equipped, student-centric facility designed to support Under-graduate medical education. The laboratory plays a vital role in bridging theoretical knowledge with practical application, enabling students to develop a strong foundation in biochemical principles relevant to clinical practice.
The laboratory is spacious, well-ventilated, and designed in accordance with regulatory and safety standards. It accommodates multiple batches of students simultaneously, ensuring a conducive environment for hands-on learning and active participation. Adequate workstations are provided, each equipped with essential instruments and materials required for routine biochemical experiments.
The laboratory supports practical training in core areas of clinical biochemistry, including :-
Modern instruments such as colorimeters, spectrophotometers, electrophoresis and chromatography apparatus, centrifuges, semi-auto analyzers, and water baths are available to familiarize students with techniques commonly used in clinical laboratories. Regular calibration and maintenance of equipment are ensured to maintain accuracy and reliability.
Emphasis is placed on laboratory safety, good laboratory practices, and ethical handling of biological samples. Students are trained in proper use of personal protective equipment, waste disposal methods, and standard operating procedures.
Under the guidance of experienced faculty and technical staff, the student laboratory promotes analytical thinking, technical proficiency, and confidence in laboratory work. The facility plays a crucial role in preparing students for clinical postings, research activities, and future professional responsibilities as medical practitioners.
Undergraduate medical students are also familiarised with the clinical laboratory where patient sample analysis is done. An overview regarding quality assurance measures is provided during the visit.
Department of Biochemistry maintains a well-organized and resource-rich departmental library curated to support undergraduate, postgraduate, and faculty academic activities. The library serves as an essential learning and reference facility, complementing classroom teaching, practical training, research, and continuing medical education.
The departmental library houses a curated collection of standard textbooks, reference books, practical manuals, and review volumes covering core and advanced areas of medical biochemistry. These resources are aligned with the CBME curriculum prescribed by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and cater to MBBS, postgraduate students, and faculty members.
In addition to textbooks, the library provides access to national and international journals, recent editions, exam-oriented guides, and research reference materials, enabling students and faculty to stay updated with recent advances in biochemistry, laboratory medicine, molecular biology, clinical enzymology, and metabolic disorders.
The library offers a quiet and conducive study environment within the department, facilitating self-directed learning, group discussions, seminar preparation, and research reference. Faculty members regularly update the collection to ensure relevance, accuracy, and alignment with evolving academic and clinical requirements.
The Biochemistry Library plays a pivotal role in fostering academic excellence, analytical thinking, and research aptitude, thereby contributing significantly to the overall educational mission of the medical college.
