Department of General Medicine
The General Medicine department at Jubilee Mission Medical College, Thrissur is the foundation of adult healthcare, providing comprehensive evaluation, diagnosis, and management of a wide range of medical conditions. Staffed by experienced internists, staff nurses, the department focuses on prevention, early detection, and treatment of common illnesses, chronic diseases, and complex multi-system disorders.
Services include outpatient consultations, inpatient care, and emergency medical services, ensuring seamless care for patients with diverse needs. Through a holistic, patient-centered approach, the department supports long-term health, improves quality of life, and contributes to the overall well-being of the community.
The department functions as the primary referral hub for adult medical problems and coordinates closely with Emergency Medicine, Critical Care, Cardiology, Nephrology, Neurology, Gastroenterology, Pulmonology, Oncology, and allied specialties. Clear referral criteria and escalation pathways are maintained.
Jubilee Mission Hospital began in 1952 with outpatient medical services and later expanded to inpatient care. As the hospital grew, the Department of Medicine flourished under the leadership of Dr. Varghese Paul, becoming one of the largest private-sector medical units in the district.
With the establishment of Jubilee Mission Medical College in 2003, the Department continued to be a trusted center of care for patients from Thrissur and neighboring districts. The department was initially led by Dr. M. V. Muralidharan, MD, DM (former Professor of Medicine, Medical College Hospital, Thrissur), followed by Dr. K. B. Mohan, MD (former Professor of Medicine), Late Dr. P. Baburaj, MD (Renowned medical author and former Professor of Medicine) and Dr. Jerry Earali, MD (Professor of Medicine). The department is currently headed by Dr. Saju Francis, MD (Professor of Medicine).
At present, the department serves as center of excellence in state, comprises 5 clinical units with 13 faculty members, supported by senior and junior residents and CRRI interns. The department is recognized for postgraduate MD training in General Medicine with an annual intake of four students and a consistent 100% pass rate since inception.
